As we age, our faces change. Many people develop excess skin and fat in their top eyelids. Others may notice that their brows have descended over the years, causing them to look tired or angry. When it comes to addressing these issues and rejuvenating the eye area, a popular course of action is often a brow lift and/or upper blepharoplasty.
There are 2 general types of brow lifts — traditional and limited incision. Both procedures lift the forehead and brows, but they use different techniques.
The traditional brow lift, still applicable in appropriate cases, involves an incision along the hairline and then conservatively removing sagging forehead or scalp skin. This approach may allow for greater control over how the brow is positioned but requires a longer incision and can lead to hair loss.
The limited incision, or endoscopic, brow lift is a less invasive procedure. Small incisions are hidden within the hair, and it is unlikely that hair will need to be shaved. A small video camera may be used to view and re-position the brow area. This requires a shorter operating time, smaller incisions, and lower risk of hair loss. It is the technique most surgeons generally prefer.
Upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is performed when a patient has excess skin and fat in the upper eyelid, which can make them look tired or even obstruct vision in extreme cases. Upper blepharoplasty, which is a common, minor procedure, corrects this by removing said excess skin and fat. This creates a more refreshed, youthful appearance.
When to Combine Procedures
It’s quite common for a patient to choose a brow lift and upper blepharoplasty. Combining these procedures means that the patient only has to go through one recovery period, and it prevents the brow from dropping lower which can happen after upper eyelid surgery alone. Treating multiple concerns at once can lead to increased facial rejuvenation.
The best way to know whether you can benefit from a brow lift and/or upper blepharoplasty is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Chaboki. He has performed these procedures many times and has many happy patients who have benefited from them.
