You may be a good facelift candidate if you have visible signs of facial aging—such as sagging skin, jowls, or loss of definition along the jawline and neck—that don’t improve with nonsurgical treatments. As a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, I determine candidacy for a facelift by evaluating your facial anatomy, skin quality, health status, and aesthetic goals. In this post, I’ll explain the key factors that help decide whether a facelift is right for you so you can feel confident in your treatment journey.
Who Benefits From a Facelift?
Patients who benefit most from a facelift are those with visible facial aging that cannot be adequately addressed with nonsurgical treatments. While candidacy varies from person to person, facelift candidates often share several common characteristics:
- Over 40 years old
- In good general health
- Excess neck skin or fat
- Jowls or loose skin tissue along the jawline
- Can set aside time for recovery after surgery
A consultation at Potomac Plastic Surgery is essential to determine candidacy and the best facelift approach for your goals.
What Is a Facelift and Neck Lift?
A facelift, or neck lift, is an elective cosmetic procedure that rejuvenates the face for men and women over 40. Both the facelift and neck lift effectively reduce the signs of aging and sun damage of the lower face. Cosmetic surgery is one option among many good aesthetic options, including nonsurgical solutions. Keep in mind that your face continues to age with time, despite any treatment or surgery, but you will continue to look better after cosmetic surgery than if you’ve never had the initial facelift surgery.
What To Expect During Your Facelift Consultation?
During the consultation, I thoroughly explore your concerns and discuss your aesthetic goals. Our conversation covers topics such as:
- Nonsurgical facelift options, especially for patients who have never tried a procedure and are just starting to consider plastic surgery. These patients may be looking for minor changes or minimally invasive treatments to freshen their appearance. Or, they may not have the opportunity to take time off work to recover after a facelift. Non-surgical facelift options for DC-area residents may include dermal fillers, fat transfer, or BOTOX® Cosmetic. These non-surgical treatments are sometimes referred to as a “liquid facelift”.
- Surgical facelift options, including mini facelift, mid facelift, and deep plane facelift, depending on the extent of correction required. Modified techniques may be appropriate for patients with earlier signs of aging. However, the results are typically less durable.
Washington, DC-area facelift candidates may include those who have already tried Juvederm® or Restylane® but were not completely satisfied with the short-term results. Alternatively, some patients prefer to have natural results without the injection of synthetic materials. Anatomically, a facelift might be a better aesthetic option than injectables or laser treatments for someone with loose, sagging skin, especially along the jawline (jowls) and neck (turkey gobbler).

As an experienced facelift surgeon trusted by patients in Potomac and throughout Washington, DC, I will tailor the facelift to your degree of facial aging and aesthetic goals.
