Men and women considering rhinoplasty often have problems breathing through their nose. A deviated septum, a common factor in nasal congestion, is a structural condition where the nasal passages are narrow and restrict airflow. While a deviated septum is very common on its own, a nasal injury or broken nose can contribute to the bone and/or cartilage bending and twisting. Washington DC patients with a deviated septum may complain of symptoms such as nasal allergies, blockage, or congestion.

This Washington DC area man had injured his nose in the past from sports and reported chronic difficulty breathing through the nose from a deviated septum. He sought a nasal surgeon who could improve both the appearance and function of the nose and found rhinoplasty specialist Dr. Chaboki to review his rhinoplasty options. He wanted conservative improvement of the external nose to reduce the nasal bump and not appear as an operated nose. He underwent a septoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. His breathing has greatly improved, in addition to snoring, after nasal surgery. In addition, he now has a more proportionate and straighter nose.

The external nasal cast is removed in one week after surgery and exercise is usually resumed after two weeks. Contact sports, such as soccer or basketball, is generally allowed after two months from rhinoplasty surgery.
