Chin augmentation patients in Washington consider chin augmentation for many reasons. In addition to improving a weak chin, chin augmentation can improve the appearance of other areas such as the neck, cheeks, and nose. Plastic surgeons may perform chin augmentation alone or in conjunction with other facial procedures, such as a facelift or neck lift, neck liposuction, or rhinoplasty.

Choosing an implant can initially be difficult from the patient’s perspective. Chin implants come in a variety of sizes (ex. small to extra-large) and shapes (ex. extended, curvilinear, square). In addition, different materials are used in chin augmentation (ex. silicone, porous polyethylene, Medpor®). Silicone implants, however, are the most popular in plastic surgery offices.

In terms of size, generally implants that men choose tend to be larger than implants that women choose. There isn’t a “male” or “female” chin implant, but rather implants vary based on size, shape, and material. Most patients and plastic surgeons choose a medium to extra-large extended implant. These silicone implants are thicker in the center and taper on the sides to create a smooth transition along the jawline. In addition, some chin implants conform and shape to the underlying bone structure to create a more snug “fit”.

In the office, we’ll review chin implant surgery so patients can choose the implant that is right for them. First, we’ll review the patient’s medical, surgical, and dental history. As part of the initial consultation, we perform a physical examination of not only the chin, but also the entire face and neck. Patients who consider chin augmentation often have had prior dental procedures. Next, patients will get to see and feel silicone chin implants and allowed to “try” it on in front of a mirror. Lastly, computer simulation with the patient’s photographs helps visualize potential changes with chin augmentation.

The chin implant is decided and finalized before surgery. Plastic surgeons don’t typically try different chin implants during surgery and pick the best implant.

The patients here demonstrate various sizes before and after chin augmentation surgery with silicone implants, medium, large, and extra-large sizes. In consultation with Dr. Chaboki, they personally decided the appropriate implant for them. All these patients are very happy with their decision to have surgery.

Thank you for reading our blog!

Extra large implants are estimated to provide about 1cm projection. However, the actual projection will vary based on multiple factors including the bone and skin, as well as the shape, size, and material of the implant itself.

      Best,
